| Powerful tools
Distance learning is a process. It does not depend on specific technologies or particular learning patterns. But because its applications are becoming easier to manage, they are becoming powerful tools for organizations around the world.
Distance learning involves bringing teaching and learning together through technology. In a pure sense, the "technology" could be something as low tech as dropping a lesson in the mailbox. Today, though, the definition of distance learning usually includes the concept of transmission. The transmission may be voice, video, or data. The transmission may be one one-way or two-way. If the exchange is two-way, then we say it is interactive.
In the corporate world, distance learning is often an added benefit of a business television (BTV) network. BTV is important for such diverse goals as introducing new product lines or melding a merged company in common procedures and culture. In education, distance learning provides underserved or advanced students with challenging, high-quality courseware. Particularly in higher education, distance learning provides the flexibility, both in timing and in geographic location, that may be a crucial factor in earning degrees.
Economy of scale
An important concept with any network delivery is economy of scale. Simple logic would say that if you wanted to communicate with just one person in the next room, the cheapest way to do so would be to step next door and talk. When it is many people and the are not "next door," then economy of scale comes into play. Satellites are an important component in true economy of scale. Nothing equals satellites in their ability to deliver great volumes of content to large, scattered audiences.

Any discussion of networking today should include the Internet. Several aspects -- both economic and technical -- of how the Internet relates to a BTV or educational network are discussed in a FAQ format under Internet Technology. See also Network Components
